Planning your trip

Whether you're embarking on a remote work retreat or exploring new horizons as a working nomad, the first stage of all journeys is planning and researching. Knowing about your destination can tell you more about what you need to pack.

Some essential facts you should know about the new city are the weather, temperature, activities available, amenities, and cultural norms. This can help you better plan what clothing and accessories to pack and what items are necessary for your trip.

Also, as a digital nomad, it is important to stay informed on the conditions of the city that can impact your work. For example, some cities don't have free Wi-Fi available, like Venice, and you need to make arrangements to connect.

Another important factor is chargers, power sockets, and voltage, and these can change from country to country. You may need a voltage converter, wireless adapter, USB travel adapter, different plug types, and more. We will explain more about this later.

By researching your destination, you will be able to tailor a specific packing list that adapts to all your needs as a working nomad.

Deciding on your luggage

How to pack your luggage as a digital nomad? Well, first it is important to know what you are taking with you, a suitcase or a backpack? Depending on your preferences and how long-term your trip is, you can choose one or the other. Let's check some advice for each option.

How to pack your suitcase?

A suitcase offers you a bigger space to bring all you need. Once you have your packing list made, you can visualize an efficient way to organize your items.

We recommend starting with the bigger objects. Use folding techniques like rolling instead of folding to reduce space. Another option is to get a travel organizer or packing cubes that help you organize all items efficiently.

It is important to keep in mind your work tools and all electronics. For tablets, laptops, and other delicate electronics, protect them with the right case, or if you don't have any, place them carefully between your clothes to avoid damage.

How to pack your backpack travel?

A backpack is a bigger challenge due to the smaller space. For these circumstances, we recommend creating a detailed packing list first, prioritizing what is needed to avoid packing unnecessary items.

The best recommendation for backpacks is to roll all your clothes and use compression bags. Place all your heavy items at the bottom, and all your light and most-used items at the top. Also, water and other liquids should go at the bottom to avoid leaks, while your electronics should be above.

Backpacks have a higher chance of getting tossed around, so it is fundamental to protect all your fragile electronics. Use protective cases, and place all electronics in the right pocket (some backpacks have designated pockets for electronics like tablets, laptops, smartphones, and more.)

Essential gadgets and electronics

Digital nomads rely heavily on different gadgets and electronics to stay productive and connected while on the move. Among many options, these are some essentials that you could consider packing for your trip:

Laptop

As a digital nomad, your laptop is everything. Invest in a lightweight but powerful model that suits all your needs. It is important that this laptop is capable of running all your software and has a smooth performance no matter what to ensure productivity on the go.

Smartphone

A smartphone is essential to stay connected with clients and colleagues. You will need a long battery life, compatibility with your apps and software for work, and a great internet connection. We recommend researching your roaming service or getting an eSIM card to connect without problems.

Chargers and power banks

As a working nomad, one of the best investments you can make is good chargers and power banks, so no matter what happens, you can keep up with your work. Choose compact and versatile options that support multiple devices and offer fast charging.

Travel adapters

One of the requisites to become a digital nomad is to always carry a travel adapter. It is essential to ensure compatibility with international power outlets and protect your electronics at the same time. This simple tool will allow you to charge your devices without worrying about plug types or voltage differences.

Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot

Stay connected to the internet wherever you go with a portable Wi-Fi hotspot device. These pocket-sized gadgets allow you to access high-speed internet on multiple devices simultaneously, ensuring reliable connectivity for remote work, video calls, and online research.

External hard drive

If your work doesn't require much space, you probably can back up your files in cloud storage. However, if you handle heavy files, like videos, large amounts of images, renders, and similar, you can use an external hard drive to create a backup of your files. By storing your data securely offsite, you can safeguard against loss or damage to your primary devices and access your files from anywhere in the world.

Accessories

These are not mandatory but can make you comfortable. Packing accessories like compact laptop stands, ergonomic mice, or portable USB hubs can help you stay productive while occupying little space.

Headphones or earbuds

Block out distractions and immerse yourself in your work or entertainment with a quality pair of headphones or earbuds. Choose wireless options for added convenience and portability, and consider noise-canceling features for enhanced focus in busy environments.

With this guide, you are ready to pack for your next adventure. Never miss an item again and plan ideally for all your future trips while knowing exactly what to bring to stay productive.
